2. In both Blonde on Blonde and Sam and Dave, David plans to tell Maddie about his feelings for her, but is thwarted by Sam. In this episode, David finally has the opportunity to talk to Maddie - in the office, in the car and in his apartment - yet he doesn't. Why not? David has now gated his heart once again, he is afraid of rejection. After 3 years of "is you is or is you aint", the test of losing Maddie forever has forced the hands of David and Maddie's kismet relationship; and David is scared. Although I believe that David knows Maddie must love him, yet the problem with our beloved couple has never been about loving each other; its about how much. Each fear that love is not enough to overcome their differences, not so much for David until Sham comes into the picture, both barrels ready to fire. IMHO, David is then faced with the decision of loving her so completely that he sets Maddie free to be her idea of happy; no matter how much it hurts.

5. Elaine Johnson comments that women make love with their hearts. David glances at Maddie. What is he thinking? David is more oft looking for Maddie's reaction, as this is how he has come to know her so very well. David's not exactly sure what has transpired , although his heart was probably heavy with the realization that Maddie has slept with Sham. Is David really thinking about it? I don't believe so because when he thinks about things of that nature, which affect his heart, he breaks hockey sticks.

6. Why do you think Sam chooses this particular moment to propose? Do you think it was planned or was it a spur of the moment question? You all very well know that I believe Sham to be a total weasel! His nice guy routine is very tiresome and manipulative. As stated before, Sham came back intending on renewing his romantic relationship with Maddie; knowing full well he may have some competition. (As it has been quite a few years since seeing Maddie & after all, she is Maddie Hayes..hubba hubba!) In "Sam & David" there was no surprise in Sham's eyes when he saw David at the door, as he was prepared to have a run-in eventually with a suitor. His subtle body language with buttoning his shirt made the possibility of Sham having slept with Maddie very real for, at this time, an unknown suitor. I believe Sam didn't care who it was, his cockiness for having a deep background with Maddie and previous intimate ties, gave him the audacity to believe that he could come and sweep Maddie off her feet. P.S. Anybody find it interesting that Sham is an astronaut? I'm glad he never made it to the moon LOL!!!

7. Discuss the significance of the trunk scene (sigh). Is it a turning point in their relationship? Does it tell David what he wants to know? Most definitely, first of all, Maddie is the first to say "I hate you, David Addison", which he correctly interprets to be a declaration of love, so he feels safe to return it. He's not giving an inch until she does (and vice versa...). And for her to just crumble into his arms like that is such a huge deal for Maddie to do, it tells him enough to give him that smug confidence we see in IACM. Spot on Man!! ;D

I've got a question...why is Maddie so lovey-dovey toward Sam in her office? (And is it just me, or do you simultaneously cringe and get ticked that we never saw her approach David that way? ) It is not just you J!!! The word 'HATE' is such a strong word, so I'll just say I have a tempestuous disdain for those moments when Maddie is seemly affectionate towards Sam. P.S. JPen I absolutely adored your remix!!! ;D Thanks for the kind words, since...and glad that it's not only me! "Tempestuous disdain"...awesome! ;D

6. Why do you think Sam chooses this particular moment to propose? Do you think it was planned or was it a spur of the moment question?Since, I'm with you all the way on this one...No question, Sammy had it planned, for at least as long as he was working on the lamb. He definitely had some agenda with Maddie from the start; whether he showed up in LA with the express purpose of making Maddie Mrs. NASA is debatable. In any case, enter David...and, as gray said, the ante goes up. WAY up. As far as the moment goes, Sammy knows that Maddie has just spent most of the evening with David. No better time to try and wipe good ol' Addison from her mind. Not to mention, he probably figures there's nothin' like a proposal as a prelude for some fine boot knocking...

Don't you love Bert with a Yuban buzz?
Yes, yes I do! Curtis is awesome in this scene...and while we're on the subject (!), there's an interesting exchange that I had never really noticed before:
Bert (in reference to Alan & Rita): An entire night of betrothed bliss--ya know what I mean?
Maddie: No...no, I don't.
Interesting that Maddie says this just after spending the night with the man who, if he had his druthers, would be her betrothed...

Thank you for the great discussion, everyone! Ifve been having a fun time reading through all the posts, and would like to add a bit of my impressions about the trunk scene.
7. Discuss the significance of the trunk scene (sigh). Is it a turning point in their relationship? Does it tell David what he wants to know?
Maybe this episode is my most favorite in Sam arc because of this scene ( and the milk can truck chase). Because Maddie finally reveals her true feelings, and her line gcbut you and mec wecwech always touches my heart. I think this tells the various things of them shared with, loved with and fought with, and she is definitely going to miss him if she decides to be with gthe perfect man.h
And as gray nailed it all, I too really love Maddie just fitting in her character wefve seen from S1, and the setting of the stage. I think this is a perfect way to focus their special relationship and intimacy in the blue light. Nothing else is needed. Beautiful! I really appreciate they made this scene!

(And is it just me, or do you simultaneously cringe and get ticked that we never saw her approach David that way? ) jen, I HATE that scene! It boils me when Maddie says, "Now that's the kind of talk that I like" or something like that. GGRRRRR. By the way, I find it curious that Sam has his hands in his pockets when he's kissing her. Does that seem strange or is it just me?

Not just you, lin...I think it's strange, too. Not to read too much into it (HA!), but it seems to me he would put his arms around her, the same way he puts a hand on her cheek when he sees her hesitation after the proposal...he's trying to "catch" her, hold her in one place long enough to convince her that they should be together.

7. Discuss the significance of the trunk scene (sigh). Is it a turning point in their relationship? Does it tell David what he wants to know?*Sigh* and *sigh* again. This is one of my favorite scenes in the series...I love the lighting, the starkness of it, the sweetness and tenderness. It's the purest expression of their love that we ever get to see. I love the "hate you" exchange, and the "you look awful/you smell awful" (="God, you're beautiful" and "This feels--right..." [and possibly "Why the hell has it taken a year for you to kiss me again?"]). I love the way David doesn't grab her, or try to turn the kiss into something else, and I love how Maddie leans into him. Most of all, though, I love the irony of Maddie's frustrated comment: "I can't believe you're gonna sit there and let me go through this by myself!" Deep down, Maddie really does think of David as her partner in all respects--he is the guy who's been there for her, personally and professionally (um, most of the time ), for 2 1/2 years. She's come to rely on him...and even when it comes to marrying/not marrying Sam, she subconsciously wants him to be there, holding her hand, while she makes the decision. ----SO---- The question in my mind is, given all this sweetness and tenderness and Maddie-subtly-admitting-she-needs-him-ness, WHY DOESN'T DAVID SPEAK UP? As gray said, now is the time--Maddie's put her cards out there, and he's not going to get a better opportunity. Though maybe he was planning to speak up, until Maddie had her Mascara Moment...note to self, David--forget the tissues, just tell her you love her!!

Oh Jen, what a great post - especially the bit about not speaking up - I mean he knows enough to put it out there SHEESH!! Maybe it's because now he's OVER confident that he'll get a second opportunity, so he doesn't need to rush?? And it's so true that he is indeed everything to her - he fills every role, partner, confidante, buddy etc etc.

David puts his hands in his pockets when he is really thinking about something serious, difficult, sad, uncomfortable about a situation, when he looks at Maddie the way he looks at her, etc.. The garage kiss, the kisses in his dreams, his arms were around her. Sam comes into a "place of business", puts his hands in his pockets as if he has every right to be there and behave unbusiness- like in Maddie's office. Very assuming on his part, but why did Maddie let him break her office decorum??!! Not that I'm opposed to a little kissey in the office, mind you!! Two men in Maddie's life that share the same mannerism, but it means two different things... Question: In what other way is Sam and David the same?
