Come on Sandra- you can watch it- just take a deep breath and go for it! These episodes have such great acting from Bruce that you simply can't miss my dear :-) There's so many little gems tucked away in the 4th season vault - come on girl, come on... lol xxx Yeah c'mon Sandra! Just do it! It is not that bad actually, there are some sweet moments too.. Besides, I agree with Nancy, Bruce's performance is brilliant, he does his best, you will love watching him! But I really miss Cybill in this episode, I am not so fond of episodes where she is not around, it doesn't seem right: David without Maddie? No. It is wrong. So wrong. Of course I will watch. I just... don't wanna be rushed. And of course will I love watching Bruce, I always do. But, tell me, Goldie, just how unfeeling and heartless do you think I am?? I don't like episodes without any of them, and David without Maddie is wrong of course. That's the bad thing about season 4...

But you should know that there are also many good things about this season, well...maybe not so many, but still there are some! And even this particular episode in spite of the sadness and desperation it is still full of strong moments. Just watch it and you'll see

There really are some lovely episodes in season 4.....and in the "when life gives you lemons" category, the writers did OK with a lot of them.
They surely gave us some quotable quotes...some awesome Claymation, and two of my very favorite episodes. And as far as acting -- season 4 is Bruce's season!
But I agree, there are a couple of "grit your teeth and get through 'em" episodes...can you say "Tale in Two Cities"?
Of course, we will not go far into season 5 before we experience "The Invasion of the Maddie and David Body Snatchers"! Now there's something to be afraid of!

OK just rewatched this one, and it's surely heartbreaking. I won't answer the questions, just give my unordered thoughts.
Love Agnes again, her concern... I think she senses that something is fishy about David's enthusiasm although he looked so sincere when he told her how great everything went, like he wanted to talk himself into believing it. But no flies on Agnes - that's why she tried to cut Bert's blabbing off, I think.
The other mind-reader here is Maddie's mom, of course - one look at her daughter's face after David's name had been mentioned was enough to tell that Maddie had not just dropped by and that the issues she had to work out had to do a lot with David, if not everything.
The phone call - too sad for words, my heart bleeds for both of them. How Maddie tried to hold her tears back, to swallow them, and she almost choked on them. All that pain.
The claymation is pure genius - I love how it mirrors David's feelings: first, he is so angry that, in his imagination, he turns Maddie into an ugly witch. Then, when he calms down and listens to her, with every shot on Maddie her ugliness disappears together with his fury, and her beauty reappears together with his love: first the ugly face, then the ugly dress, then the witch hat becomes a nicer one, and in the next shot it is a princess's cap.
Thinking that this was done 25 years ago, it's amazing how brilliant it is; watching the facial expression of the toad and the way he purses his lips - it's stunning how recognizable David is in there.
The smashing up of the car - oh how he was desperate to let his pain and rage out, until he felt empty inside and was then able to put up a mask for the office. I don't think the car symbolized their relationship in the sense that he wanted to smash that one too. But in a way it did of course - they had fought and laughed in that car, said hurtful things, said wonderful things, made love. Maybe it was his way of yelling out Hell, all of this - doesn't it count any more?!
Most heartbreaking moment: the last scene with David, dropped on his desk, head on his arms in desperation, and then the little moment when he turns his head and looks at the phone - that last longing glance... rips my heart out.

I love your heart felt comments Sandra - this one is a toughie to swig back, you have to take little sips as it can be a painful ordeal. As you so correctly point out, there are moments of genius in here (the claymation scene) and, let's face it: Bruce's acting (which really is at its peak in this series).
Despite this episode's unforgettable moments that you describe so well...it always leaves me feeling down. That phone call between them is just so devastating - both of them not communicating what they really want to say and to echo your sentiments once again Sandra, that moment right at the end of the episode is heart breaking - akin to the moment when he's standing in the rain outside Maddie's with the flowers.
As a member of the audience, it's horrible being in the position of omniscient viewer - we know how they both tick, we know what they are both feeling, we know that they both suffer inside - that makes the pathos worse and leaves us feeling so much more frustrated: if only they'd talked it out!
Sandra - I'll catch you on the thread for 'Take a Left...' - I'll make sure I watch it this weekend! Be sure to check it against the original script you have - there's an awesome dream sequence that they left out that is utterly heart-breaking (maybe they figured we couldn't take anymore) - but at least we are rewarded with Bert's first chase scene which is very funny - oh and beepers! I got beepers!

I have to re-watch this episode but I hesitate because I remember it made me feel desolate...
